The Juror

Paul Hartley a Professor at the School of Art and Design, East Carolina University, Greenville, NC. He has recently retired as coordinator of the Painting and Drawing Area. He received his BA from North Texas State University and his MFA from East Carolina University. See his work at www.ecu.edu/art/paintweb/phmenu.htm

Juror's statement:

Judging art work at large events like this is a dodgy business at best. I know that I will be confronted with a lot of very good work and must somehow decide how to narrow it to a reasonable group of things that will make up a good exhibition. I appreciate good craft, effective formal arrangement, and the thoughtful and interesting expression of thoughtful and interesting things. Overall, whatever the mixture of these aspects and many more, I would like each selected work to evoke something special, an individual viewpoint. While, as a judge, I will be considering all these things, I know they have a sort of typical 'art talk" vagueness that renders them broadly meaningless except for whatever it is that I decide they mean to me.

With all my personal definitions and quirks, I promise to do my best to do a good job of selecting a strong exhibition. Really though, I know that the result will just be one person's opinion at a given time.

I will be to blame for my decisions on this show, just as I am to blame for the choices I make when I try to paint. Often, no doubt, I make wrong choices but I never want to.
